About the Artist

Wendy Rosselli was born in Johannesburg. She studied art initially at the Johannesburg Technical College then continued her studies at St Martins School of Art in London.

She moved to Zimbabwe with her husband Robin in 1957 and settled in Masvingo, the life and landscape of which are clearly evident in her work of this period.

Wendy first exhibited in Zimbabwe in the annual heritage exhibition at the National Gallery in 1961 and thereafter fairly regularly through the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Several of her works are part of permanent collections in the National Galleries in Harare and Bulawayo, the Mobile Permanent Collection and the Pietersburg Gallery, South Africa; as well as in numerous private collections worldwide.

Wendy has received several awards from the Zimbabwe National Gallery including certificates of excellence, and awards of both merit and distinction for works displayed there. She has been included in the prestigious Merchant Bank of Central Africa Decade of award winners Zimbabwe Heritage 1986-1996 Contemporary Visual Arts.

Wendy returned to South Africa permanently in 2003 and now lives and paints in Kommetjie, a small village in the Western Cape. The influence of the new environment is clearly evident in her work, both in the subject matter and in the use of light, colour and space. Her interest in simplification of form and the canvas surface is also more evident. The palette has become softer, and the works regularly play with natural elements. Her medium remains predominantly oil paint on canvas and her subject matter continues to include trees, flowers and birds. She is also increasingly known for her graphite and  charcoal drawings from life.

Wendy continues to innovate, her style constantly evolving as a result of the diverse environmental influences. Her work remains internationally sought after.
